Norwegians travel a lot, and is also known for heading to places guarantied with sun and high temperatures during summer. But this year more and more Norwegians choose their own home country as their holiday destination. 

Four out of five Norwegians go on summer vacation in 2016, according to a survey by TNS Gallup conducted for NHO Travel. Of those, six out of ten holiday in Norway, writes As many as 72 percent believe that the best summer vacation includes hiking in the mountains and wilderness adventures.

– The study confirms that being physically active is an important part of the holiday for many Norwegians. And if you want hiking, Norway has a lot to offer, says Kristin Krohn Devold, CEO of NHO Travel. Many also appreciate lazy days at their cabin, eating good food and spending time with family and friends. Many Norwegians either own their own cabin or have friends or family that does, so this makes it easy to seek to nature for recreation. 

Eastern Norway is the most popular destination. Nearly 50 % said they will spend their holidays in Akershus, Oppland, Telemark, Oslo, Buskerud, Hedmark, Vestfold or Østfold. 

Being out in the woods and up in the mountains are the most popular summer activities in Norway, according to the survey. Hiking in the woods or along the coast, hiking in the mountains, cycling, mushroom-harvesting and berry-picking are the activities most say they will do during this summer holidays.
